Double Knit - Fabriclore

Double Knit

What is Double Knit ?

  • Double Knit is produced using two sets of needles, hence the name and produces a fabric that is double the regular thickness.
  • These two layers of knitting are joined by interlocking stitches.
  • The fabric is constructed using needles, creating loops upon the back and front. These loops are woven together so that the layers are intertwined, and they will not separate.
  • The result is a dense fabric, which is twice as thick as a common knit fabric as well as has firm stability that compares favorably with woven fabrics.
  • The two layers can be made using different colours and different yarns, to create an interesting effect of can use the same as each other to create a thicker fabric with no wrong side.
  • Double knit can be produced in many different ways. It can be made by hand using Double pointed knitting needles. It can also be done using a knitting machine.
  • The natural fibers and synthetics, like silk and polyester respectively, can be used for the purpose of creating double knits. Rayon and cotton are other popular options.

History

  • Knitting is believed to have originated in the Middle East in the 5th century and travelled to Europe with wool traders soon afterwards.
  • Interestingly, the examples of early knitting from Egypt are actually made from cotton fibres, not wool.
  • Many of them have Arabic blessings knitted into them, or symbols to ward off bad luck.
  • In the 14th century, the knitted textile form was used by fishermen to make warm, woollen, weatherproof jumpers for trips to sea.
  • By the 16th century, knitting machines were used to knit hosiery for elite classes.
