History

  • Historically, the fabric was made from linen fibers which are produced by the flax plant.
  • However, by the end of the 19th century, linen fibers were replaced by cotton.
  • It is known that the United States was the first one to incorporate the cotton fibers into the making of sailcloth.
  • The change in the fibers happened due to the importing issues of linen during wartime and the abundance of cotton fabric available in the nation.
  • The present sailcloth is made with synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester, and various other polymers.
