Toile Fabric

Toile Fabric - Fabriclore

What is Toile Fabric?

  • The word "toile" comes from the French word for linen cloth.
  • It is a type of printed fabric with a unique look and lines that are similar to those from the Art Nouveau period.
  • Toile is mostly a style of design that looks like prints with rural, floral, or romantic themes.
  • Toile is characterized by a recurring pattern that depicts a detailed image. This picture, which often depicts pastoral scenes of everyday life, such as children at play or a couple having a picnic beside a lake, is known as a toile.

History

  • In the 18th century, printed toile fabric was first made in Ireland, but it became more popular in France. This makes the style seem more European.
  • A German industrialist named Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf founded a factory in the village of Jouy-en-Josas, which led to the rise in popularity of the printed toile fabric.
  • At the same time, he went into business with Jean-Baptiste Huet, a well-known fashion designer who is best known for making some of the first and most famous Toile designs.
  • These designs showed either small scenes from French life or scenes from European legends and myths in black and white against a white background, in the traditional monochrome pastoral setting.
  • After becoming the standard in fashion and interior design during that time period, Huet's ideas eventually gave rise to the current version of the pattern that we now refer to as toile. It is now the general benchmark for all Toile goods that are currently available.
