How to be your own Sewist? #6 Peppermint Pocket Skirt

Here is another amazing and quick afternoon sew from the Peppermint Magazine. This is called the Pocket Skirt designed by the amazing Tara from Paper Theory.

Let's jump right into making it.

The Pattern

This skirt has great panel details with large pockets that are unique and very functional in my opinion. I am big fan of pockets in all my clothing! Check out all the lovely versions on Instagram to gain some inspiration.

The skirt pattern is perfect for colour blocking or pattern blocking. With an elasticated waist this skirt is so comfortable to wear around the house or wear out. 

This skirt will look different in different weight and weave of fabrics. You can check out more drapier looks on Instagram. My preference is to use a more structured fabric like Cotton or  linen. 

The Fabric

I chose to make this skirt in a beautiful Akola Indigo Hand Blocked Slub Cotton fabric. This same fabric is no longer in stock but you can see others like this one here

This fabric is beautiful to work with. I was worried that it might bleed while washing but I saw nothing. The colour is rich and sustaining. A pro tip is to dip all hand block fabrics in little salty water & then carry on the sewing.

The drape of the fabric is perfect for this skirt and for many different types of garments from dresses to jumpsuits for the summer ahead! 

Sewing up the skirt

This pattern runs big with an option to adjust your size at the waist with an elastic. So it is best to choose a size according to your hip measurements (or waist, if it is larger). Using the measurement charts, I chose to cut out a size 6 (the smallest size).

The process of sewing this garment is pretty simple and can be finished very quickly. Be sure to transfer all the notches onto the fabric so the pockets are even!

To sew up the skirt, you will first sew the side seams with the large pockets. 

Once the side panels are sewn, you can then attach the front and back panel to the sides. The waistband is already attached to the top of the skirt so once all the panels are attached, you will just fold the top down to make a channel for the elastic. 

Techniques you will learn

1. Construct a skirt with panels and an inbuilt waistband.

2. Learn to sew an elastic casing and insert an elastic

I absolutely love this pattern. It is a very simple yet elegant design & makes for a perfect casual wear. Wear it comfortably at home or hop on to the supermarket looking a little chic. If You are yet to start on your sewing journey, you can not go wrong with this pattern.
