History

  • Chiffon fabric was initially designed in France, however, the manufacturing of it expanded across the globe as soon as the Industrial Revolution steamed up.
  • During the first few years of the 1900s, the silk chiffon was comparatively manufactured on a larger scale within the U.S than other nations.
  • Since it was mainly made of silk, it was quite expensive for an ordinary person to buy.
  •  Due to this, people started replacing silk with other materials for manufacturing chiffon.
  • In 1938, Nylon chiffon was manufactured and in 1958, polyester chiffon.
  • With the creation of these synthetic fabrics , chiffon became common, accessible and popular to use.
History Of Chiffon Fabric

What makes it special?

Chiffon is a gauze-like fabric which is known for its lustrous and sheer appearance.

Sheer

Chiffon cloth has a transparent appearance, that is , when you hold the fabric under a microscope, it will appear like a mesh.

Rough

Due to alteration of S-twist and Z-twist, the fabric has slight puckers which makes it rough in touch.

Strong

Synthetic chiffon, as well as natural chiffon, are strong because of the tight weaving of the fabric.

Shimmery

The silk chiffon fabric has a shimmery texture whereas cotton chiffon has a matte texture.

Stretch

Since chiffon is woven in different directions, it has a feel similar to spandex. As silk is more pliable, therefore, silk chiffon has more stretch in comparison to polyester chiffon.

How to Judge the Authenticity of Chiffon?

  • Silk chiffon can be identified by holding it under a light. If the fabric reflects light from different angles then it is pure chiffon.
  • If the fabric has a white sheen irrespective of the angle you are holding , then it is an artificial chiffon.
  • Check the stretch, sturdiness and shimmery consistency of the chiffon fabric.
  • Chiffon has slight puckers due to its altering process.
