History

  • Jersey was invented in the Middle Ages in Jersey, Channel Islands, thus the name.
  • The fabric was regarded as appropriate solely for men's clothing and was used in the production of men's underwear and sweaters for fishermen.
  • Coco Chanel, however, is credited with revolutionizing the jersey market and introducing the fabric to the women's fashion business in 1916.
  • She did this by creating jersey dresses and coats that were pleasant to wear.
