What is Soybean Fabric? 

  • With the quality of being soft, soy fabric is the most eco-friendly fabric. 
  • It is also known as “vegetable cashmere”.
  • Soybean fabric is manufactured by using soy proteins which are extracted from hulls of soybeans.
  • This interesting textile transforms waste products into usable fabric with limited processing and less usage of chemicals.

History

  • The Great Henry ford invented the Soybean fabric, he was recognized to wear soy outfits towards the end of his life in an effort to make the soybean textile popular in the U.S.
  • During 1940, Ford started to produce a fabric that was a combination of soy fiber and wool fiber, which was used in making upholstery.  
  • The project is stated to have a short life due to World War II.
  • In 1999, several engineers announced a new way to produce soy fabric which is comparatively less expensive and more efficient.
  • By 2003, the new method of production gained significant success around the globe.

Types of Soybean Fabric

Pure Soy Fabric

Soy fabric created from processed soy proteins is shiny, breathable, and stretchy. 

However, it is not suitable for the dyeing process and it is not durable. 

Soy-Cotton blends

Various manufacturers blend soy with cotton to enhance its durability. Blended soy-cotton retains silk-like shine along with cotton-like strength.

Soy-Wool blends

Soy-wool fabric is a less popular textile, though it was a popular combination during the mid-twentieth century. It retains the smoothness and elasticity of soy fabric.

Soybean fabric comprises of shiny texture similar to silk with an excellent draping appearance.

It is lightweight, soft, and smooth.

Absorbent

Soy fabric has a better moisture transmission in comparison to cotton.

It has a great breaking strength in comparison to wool, silk, and cotton. 

Shrinkage

Under the effect of hot water, soy fabric does not shrink.

Soy fabric is crease-resistant and easy to wash.

Care Instructions

  • Soybean fabric can be washed in a machine
  • Lay flat on a plain surface to dry.
  • As soy fabric is wrinkle-resistant it does not require ironing, however, if needed use a low-setting.
