Kantha Fabric Wholesale from Fabriclore

“Kantha” refers to the elegance of running stitch as well as the finished fabric. It is a craft that has been practiced by females living in rural areas of West Bengal. This embroidered fabric is the key symbol showcasing talent and skill passed to generations. Traditionally, this craft was only seen only on sarees, quilts and dhotis but presently it has become so popular that several modern outfits are designed using Kantha embroidery.

Being one of the oldest forms of craft in India, Kantha is still practiced by millions of women in South Asia. However, during the early 19th Century this art lost its essence and disappeared before being revived by the daughter-in-law of the most famous Bengali poet and Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore in 1940.

The word Kantha has no specific etymological background, but it is believed to originate from the Sanskrit word “Kontha” which means rags. Its origin can be traced back to the pre-vedic period where the earliest written record was found to be 500 years old. In the book, Sri Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita, the poet Krishnadas Kaviraj wrote how his mother sent him a homemade Kantha in Puri by some pilgrims who were traveling there.

With mesmerizing Hand Block and Screen Print dappled on Kantha Stitch, our  collection leaves no stone unturned in highlighting the cultural vibrancy of East and West India. With plain and multi-colored threads running in a stitch across the length of cotton, rayon and viscose.  Fabriclore has customized the Kantha to incorporate Sanganeri Jaal, Booti and Paisley Prints. It is ideal for creating day-time outfits like flowy dresses, skirts, wrap-arounds, kurtas and even cushion covers, bags and more.
