What is Georgette Fabric?
- Georgette is typically similar to crepe fabric, that is, it is made from pure silk and synthetic fibers like polyester and rayon.
- It is lightweight, sheer, and has a matte finish.
- The fabric is woven by using twisted yarns that are created by applying a crinkle effect on the surface.
- It is often available in solid colors but can also be printed with floral designs.
History
- Georgette fabric was introduced in the 20th Century by Madame Georgette de la Plante.
- She was a french dressmaker who was creative and got famous for ‘net finish’ for all the dresses she designed.
- Most of its applications are dated back from 1915 to 1918.

How to Judge the Authenticity of Georgette?
To check the authenticity of the georgette fabric, you can perform various tests-
- Touch Test: Rub the Georgette fabric with your hand. If the fabric feels rough then it is pure georgette fabric.
- Burn Test: Burn a piece of fabric. If the fabric continues to burn even if the flame is removed and smells like burning paper then it is pure fabric.
- Water Stain Test: Wet the corner of the fabric and dry it with iron. If the fabric is pure then it will show the water stain after drying.
Care Instructions
- Soak the fabric before washing
- Wash the Georgette cloth with mild detergent and cold water.
- To avoid stretching do not wring the fabric
- Dry it on a flat surface.
