Chikankari: The Pride of Lucknow

Chikankari: The Pride of Lucknow - Fabriclore

A craft style rumored to be as old as 3rd Century BC, Chikankari of Lucknow is said to be started by Nur Jahan, The wife of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. This famous craft is delightfully worn by people across India and the rest of the world.

The embroidery pattern is usually done by a thick white cotton thread on soft pastel colors of blue, teal, pink and white. Light, Gorgeous and filled with history, this craft is a classic heart warmer for anyone who first sees it.

Formation

Embroidery patterns are first drawn on the fabric depending upon the type of apparel the fabric will be made to. This fabric is then set in a small frame and artisans use needles to trace the ink printed patterns. The type of stitch the artisan chooses mostly depends on the region he/she is from and the type and size of motifs. Once the embroidery on the fabric is complete, the fabric is soaked in water to remove the ink lines made earlier. After this, it is starched to obtain the right stiffness depending on the fabric.
