Organized by the FDCI (Fashion Designer Council of India), India Couture Week is an annual show that most of the fashion fanatics ardently wait for! Celebrating 10 years of its efficacious existence, the event was a big sensation this year. The seven-day mega event kicked off on 24th July with a magnificent off-site installation show by Anamika Khanna and ended with a grand closing by Manish Malhotra on 30th July. 14 designers, enchanting designs and grandiose sets, the event was successful in bringing fresh and enthralling designs to the fashion fore.
When it comes to Indian clothes and designs, the fashion industry has seen a prodigious curve. Mr Sunil Sethi aptly stated in a candid interview with HT “Ten years ago, nobody wanted to associate with Indian clothes. And now look where we have reached!” Keeping up with the trends, check out how the designers added a flavor of their expertise to their collections inspired by the rich Indian Heritage and Culture.
Day 1
Anamika Khanna
Anamika Khanna’ beautiful installation - The Luxury 2017 “Happily Ever After” at the Kila, Mehrauli was indeed a splendid start to the mega event. Showcasing a dress for every bride & wedding ritual, her collection was dipped in contrasting tones; pastels for a vintage theme wedding while bright reds and orange for a traditional Indian marriage, her designs are surely going to tick every bride’s, heart.
Rohit Bal
Known for his use of bold and majestic motifs, Rohit Bal decked the opening night with his collection “Shahaan-e-khaas”. Hosted at the Bikaner House, Delhi, the collection was inspired by the Mughal Era and dedicated to the lost craft and tradition. Regal gowns and bandh-gala achkans woven in heavy gold zari yarns gave an additional edge to his outfits. The ever-so-dashing Arjun Rampal and FDCI President Sunil Sethi closed the show slaying in Rohit Bal Couture.
DAY 2
Manav Gangwani
A well-known face in the fashion industry, Manav Gangwani got all the hearts racing at Day 2 with his glorifying collection India @ 70. Inspired by the Indian heritage and culture, he showcased the unification of conventional India crafts with a touch of modernity and panache. The extensive use of golds added to the royalty of silks, brocades, velvets woven into awe-inspiring gowns, lehengas and sarees. Not to miss, showstopper Disha Patani looked ravishing in a black off-shoulder top and lehenga-skirt embellished with rich gold motifs and zari work.
Day 3
Reynu Taandon
We cannot take our eyes off from Reynu Taandon’s captivating collection “CYAN” – inspired by peacock blues and greens. Grounding her theme on the fresh monsoon season, she presented a spectacular range of lehengas, concept gowns and dhoti suits all embellished with glitzy copper and gold handwork. Bhumi Pednekar, who was the showstopper for her show walked the ramp with grace in an ink blue lehenga teamed with a heavy gold embroidered floral jacket. What a stunner!
Shyamlal and Bhumika
Known for their bridal and trousseau couture, the duo made their debut at ICW 2017 with their collection “The Princess’s Soiree”. Giving their usual knack a modern spin, they presented a chic modern-day line of outfits, ranging from off-shoulder blouses and flowy net capes to ruffles, gowns and more. The collection was dominated by black, gold and beige tones and each outfit were adorned with sequins, zardozi, beads, 3D floral motifs and more. Showstopper Athiya Shetty walked like a princess on the ramp in a black floral lehenga teamed with a glittery sequin jacket.
Tarun Tahiliani
Leading couturier Tarun Tahiliani never fails to treat our eyes with his glamorous creations. Decorated with Chinar leaves, the set looked as glorious as his collection beautifully woven in Kashmiri Kashidas and Parsi florals! The show was steadily divided into blacks, whites and traditional colors, with a breathtaking range of ensembles ranging from lehengas, sarees, sherwanis, churidar and kurits, all inspired by the rich Kashmiri craft and tradition. The designer wanted to present a bridal collection that doesn’t confine to our chests after wearing it once! We think, with such subtle designs and colors, he absolutely lived up to his thought!
Day 4
Rahul Mishra
Inspired by the long-standing Persian Architecture, Rahul Mishra adorned the ramp with his collection “Parizaad” meaning the born of the divine. Dappled with beautiful geometrical, florals and nature inspired motifs the collection was immersed in hues of bright yellow, beige, powder pink and black. His floral embroidery is especially LOVE! We can’t stop going Awww over his one-of-its-kind closing, with his wife and daughter walking the ramp as showstoppers! Moreover, he successfully gave his designs a sustainable touch by claiming them to be easily machine-washed! Girls no more running to the dry cleaners! You know where you have to shop your trousseau from!
Anju Modi
Giving her designs a simple yet royalist feel, Anju Modi’s collection Sunheri Kothi was an absolute delight! The runway was meticulously designed into a lush green Kothi, which made the collection look all the more appealing! Inspired by the miniature art of Kishangarh, the designer exquisitely sewed the reminiscences of the 16th century Rajasthan into her designs. The ever-so-charming Dia Mirza dazzled the ramp with her enchanting queen-like ensemble.
DAY 5
Monisha Jaising
Fusing the vintage European designs with that of rich Indian crafts, Monisha Jaising presented a spectacular range of chic modern couture. Her collection Opera was dipped in a glossy color palette and crafted into stylish cuts and flairs, giving an extra oomph to the neckline and shoulder cuts! Capacious gowns woven with classic benarsi brocade and embellished with sequins and gold blocks ruled the collection theme. Stunning Shilpa Shetty set the stage on fire in a red hot off-shoulder benarsi gown!
Varun Bahl
Taking inspiration from the international style of decorative art – Nouveau and artist Alphonse Mucha, designer Varun Bahl coated the stage in a vintage mood with his collection “Dream Nouveau”. The intricate floral and plant motifs woven in a splash of colors like ivory, pink, peach, orange and rose onto fabrics like silks, tulle and georgettes, looked fresh and inviting just like the monsoon breeze. From curvy linears to asymmetrical patterns, the collection was consciously crafted for the women of today!
Day 6
Anita Dongre
A dream designer for many brides-to-be, Anita Dongre is one of the go-to designers when it comes to bridal and trousseau shopping! Her ever so enchanting gotta patti work has always been the talk of the bridal fashion industry. Her collection “Tree of love” made us fall in love with her designs all over again! The humble designer has dedicated her work to the Bishnoi tribe of Thar, Rajasthan. Apart from her classic gotta patti lehengas, we also got to treat our eyes with some beautiful fit and flare embellished dresses.
Gaurav Gupta
Known for his exquisite gowns and western ensemble, Gaurav Gupta presented a dream-like collection by the name - Moondust at the ICW Day 6. Ruled by art like scriptures, the collection was sewed in mythological forest designs. While the whole show looked no less than a fairy-tale, princess Aditi Rao Hydari walked the ramp in a voluminous ivory gown with minimal accessories. A perfect pick for engagement or reception occasions, these gowns are going to add an additional grace to your big day!
Day 7
RINA DHAKA
Rina Dhaka’s collection “Honour the Smile” was a gesture that we all can’t stop smiling over! Basing her collection’s theme on Child Empowerment and showing off her love for jewellery in her designs, she presented a dazzling ensemble line jeweled in silver and gold. Little girls were seen walking the ramp hand-in-hand with the models, all draped in strong metallic and pearls. The bold and beautiful Huma Qureshi closed the show all decked in a heavy embroidered white lehenga skirt teamed with a glitzy fringe jacket. Whistles for Rina Dhaka for this glamorous collection!
Manish Malhotra
While the whole fashion industry is going GAGA over Manish Malhotra’s grand closing at Day 7 with his collection the Sensual Affair, we are spellbound by his majestic collection too! Right from the thread and needle to the cuts and flairs, every ensemble has been designed with an explicit charm and grace. The use of antique threads, dated motifs, zari yarns and crystal detailing on a royal color palette is what we are drooling over! The young and beautiful Alia Bhatt and dashing Ranveer Singh closed the show with poise! While Alia was seen in a chocolate brown tulle skirt edged with roses and teamed with a sheer golden top, Ranveer Singh looked dapper in a navy velvet sherwani paired with micro check trousers.
While the FDCI adds another feather in their cap with such a successful show, we can’t wait for India Couture Week 2018. It’s interesting to see how Fusion has become a real DEAL in the fashion industry. This awe-inspiring amalgamation of International Art, Architecture and culture with Indian Crafts and Handlooms is truly a paradise!
